A successful American businessman, Vinod Gupta, has come a long way from his roots in rural India. Gupta has never forgotten his roots and uses his success to advance philanthropic efforts both in India and the U.S. Gupta has donated much of his wealth and will continue to donate to efforts that improve education and employment opportunities for those from disadvantaged communities.
Gupta earned his B.S. in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur)after serving in the Armed Forces in India. After completing this degree, Vinod Gupta came to the U.S. where he earned a degree in engineering, as well as a MBA. With this wealth of knowledge, Gupta then proceeded to embark on his professional career.
Vinod Gupta was employed as a Market Research Analyst at Commodore Corporation when he made his first major career breakthrough. With his experience gained at Commodore Corporation, Gupta then proceeded to found his own business, Business Research Services & American Business Lists (ABI). Gupta’s company became so successful that it began acquiring other businesses. Based on the expanding scope of services offered by ABI, Gupta re-evaluated his business. ABI then became infoUSA to better encapsulate the purpose and offerings of Gupta’s business. Gupta’s strategic vision and market insight allowed the company to continue to grow until it was sold in July 2010.
With the wealth he has obtained, Vinod Gupta has focused most heavily on education as the recipient of his charitable contributions. One of Gupta’s most recent charitable endeavors is widely praised in that it promotes gender equity in education. Vinod established Ram Rati Gupta Polytechnic which Advocates to Women Education and even provides them access to post graduate degrees and different programs. He has also helped create a girls school in his hometown in which he has donated much needed supplies and support to start creating equal opportunities for women beginning at a young age.
